Emotional Courage: Feeling Your Feelings in Difficult Times
Emotional Courage: Feeling Your Feelings in Difficult Times
There has never been a more important time for humans to feel their feelings.
Not think about them. Not analyze them. Not manage, suppress, or transcend them.
Feel them — as a body.
We are living in times of fear, uncertainty, and real turmoil. Individually and collectively, things feel unstable. Old structures are breaking down. Familiar ways of orienting are no longer reliable. And when the ground beneath us feels shaky, our nervous systems play out old patterns: contract, brace, prepare.
This isn’t a problem. It’s intelligence.
But the challenge is, it keeps us stuck and not able to access our power, agency, and capacity.
Most of us were never taught how to actually meet what’s here in our bodies. So instead of letting emotional energy move, complete, and inform us, we clamp down on it, contract around it. We tighten. We hold. We manage. Or we throw a lot of compassion and understanding at it as a way to “calm ourselves down,” turning it into trapped energy in the body that wreaks havoc.
Over time, that effort we exude to not fully feel costs us our aliveness, our clarity, and our power.
Emotions Are Not the Problem — Disembodiment Is
Emotions are not abstract experiences. They are physical events.
Fear is a set of sensations. Anger is a set of sensations. Grief, sadness, joy, excitement — all of it shows up as energy moving in our body. They often come with water; sweat, dry mouth, tears.
When we don’t know how to feel emotions as bodily energy, they can run our lives. They leak out sideways through reactivity, shutdown, overwhelm, people-pleasing, overworking, or numbness, just to name a few…
Or we exert constant effort trying to control them.
It’s all exhausting.
Being a body offers a different path.
Learning to meet emotions with attention, physicality, breath, movement, and presence allows the body to do what it naturally knows how to do: move energy through. When emotions are allowed to be felt as sensations — instead of stories or problems — they begin to transform.
This is what I mean by emotional courage.
Not forcing yourself to be brave.
But being willing to stay present with what’s actually happening inside you, at the level of BODY, and learn to trust your body's natural responsiveness.
Feeling Your Feelings as Energy
To feel your feelings as a body means shifting out of the head and into direct experience.
It means noticing:
What is here at the level of physical sensations? Temperature, pressure, density, movement.
Can I drop deeper into my body and agree to it, say yes to it, allow it, as much as I can? Deepening my body container through physicality and attention.
Can I breathe and drop effort?
Can I follow any impulses that are here in my body for movement, breath, sound, words? Can I let my body relate to these sensations and energy with my innate animal wisdom?
When we meet emotions this way, and step out of the story and history of what these sensations and energies mean, and meet the richness of the body experience without interpretation, we become more of who we really are.
We gain these energies, in substance, in capacity, in how we move through the world. They do what they are meant to do in the body. Bring clarity, power, softness, aliveness, choice, LIFE.
This is not about catharsis. It’s about embodied empowerment.
We all hold this power and potential in our body, but it takes practice, courage, and awareness.
